Painted Hearts Mobile

Happy Valentine's Day!
One of my wishes for 2015 is to make more time for paints, pencils, pens and mixed media arts...to doodle daily in my sketchbook, to take some more art classes & read more art books, to learn and practice new techniques. And not to be shy about sharing some of my attempts and ideas. So here I am with one of my first projects of the year!
For Valentine's Day I wanted to create a heart garland using some mixed-media layering techniques. I covered a few pages of plain paper back and front with watercolors and acrylic paints using brushes, stencils, stamps.... trying not to think too hard and reaching for my favorite colors...
I handwrote verses and words from 1. Corinthians 13: 4-8 about love and cut these into little strips...
then freehanded various heart shapes onto the finished painted pages and cut those out
and decoupaged some of the words onto the hearts.
To suspend them, I used a piece of driftwood left over from one of my daughter's school art projects. She had painted it a gorgeous shade of soft mint.

I stitched the finished decoupaged hearts together with the sewing machine using two contrasting colored threads - dark pink as the top thread and pale yellow in the bobbin. The threads twisted together beautifully like baker's twine.
Before I sewed them, I painted both sides of all the hearts with the decoupage medium so to give them all a glossy finish.
I am trying to reorganize and clean up my sewing studio and just love the fresh look of this mobile in my "art corner". Especially when the hearts are gently twirling and catching light.

I also want to thank Ellie of My LIttle Chickadee's for featuring an Etsy treasury I created (St. Patrick's Day theme!) as well as one of my bunny bags on her blog. Please visit her here to see it!

Thanks for looking, and have a lovely weekend!
xoxo

Enjoy those art classes this year. Sounds exciting. I have signed up for several textile classes already this year, most of them fabric dyeing related, can't wait!

What a lovely heart garland you've created, Karen!!! You've been in my mind and just this morning realized that I haven't visited your blog in a while. So here I am... need to do this more often. It's sunny and a beautiful day up here... and spring is finally showing up, at least a bit.
