origami

One day last week we sat down for a half hour to make some little paper boxes. My daughter has been given several very beautiful origami books over the years. Recently I found this pack of cute paper from the supermarket, not expensive but two sided, just perfect for practicing some origami folding.
I  chose the pink paper with the tiny hearts to make my first box, very kitschy and cute!
Everyone got involved and my children were very concentrated as they worked.
We followed the instructions that came in the pack of paper. Here's a link to on-line instructions and lots of images.
The boxes fit into each other and are perfect for little gifts. I also think they would be cute left open and filled with sweets at each place setting at a birthday party.

Next time I would like to try to fold little paper bunnies.

Have a lovely day!

mmm!

Still no sign of spring here. Yesterday it snowed all day!

On the one hand, I think it would be great to exchange anything sugary and full of carbs for lots of fresh fruits and salads right now. On the other, I'm spending 30 minutes first thing in the morning shoveling inches of heavy wet snow from our sidewalk and driveway.

I've been craving these cinnamon rolls from my Farm Chicks cookbook. I love this recipe. It's become a real favorite. Sometimes, you just have to indulge, right? So I broke down and baked them. And left a few for the rest of the family :)

My photos are so dark. The sun has gone into a seemingly endless winter hibernation behind the clouds. At least this magazine is bright and cheery. Oh, and the rolls were delicious!

Have a lovely Tuesday!

Rathaus Platz

I missed posting a layout last week due to vigorous organizing/ scrubbing / spring cleaning  - but here is my layout for this week. Had so much fun making this one!

I started with a few spritzes of blue glitter ink spray and then created a mat for the photos with several 6 x 6 inch pages stacked together. This is a photo I just love so I had it enlarged.

Also you will notice that I have titled this page in German while doing my journaling in English. The title means "Town Hall Square" which is the place my kids were standing. It's typical to my life (our lives, I guess) that I am using both languages at the same time.

A detail I love about this page is that I was able to include an actual ticket from that day from our visit to the cathedral tower. Freiburg (in the Black Forest region of southern Germany) is a very picturesque city with trademark tiny little canals you can just step over. (You must keep your eyes open when walking because they are everywhere!) I have many photos of my kids at various ages stepping over these unique canals - luckily, not in them!

I also included the cute bike button - Freiburg is one of the greenest in Germany with bike paths and cyclists everywhere.
Thanks for looking!

organizing & making

It's still very much winter here! But...this little scene in my garden must be a promise that springtime is going to come around soon, don't you think?
I've been organizing my craft space. It is a big improvement!
Stacks of fabrics neatly folded, items ready for market or shipping.
The area by my sewing machine still a bit chaotic as there is always work being done there - but actually I have tidied it up since taking this photo (honestly)! I also tackled all my kitchen cupboards and drawers. Spring cleaning is in the air!

This week I have sewed a dozen lovely little pouches. Many are still waiting to have the linings sewn in  - that is hand sewing work and takes forever! But several are completed and ready to sell. I'm busy preparing for a local Easter market and will also soon be adding pouches to my on-line shops here and here
Don't you think it's time for spring soon?

Hamburg

Last summer we drove with our car to Hamburg for a long weekend with good friends.

To put it in a nutshell, driving on the German autobahn is strenuous, even for very good drivers.

Next time we'll take the train.
Despite the long drive with all its thrills (you know, endless construction, hour-long traffic jams, pouring rain etc), it was very worth it. We loved touring the grand city of Hamburg, the busy harbor, the lovely rivers and canals, pretty villas and green parks and also just having the best time hanging out with friends that we sadly don't get to see very often. Not to mention shopping in a big city for a change.
On the road we must have had guardian angels ...the near collision with a careless truck, the flying rock that pelted our windshield with a loud bang but didn't do any damage, little things like that :) And of course big things like children behaving in the backseat.
In fact, our kids snuggled up and were the most awesome travelers. 500 km could just take 5 hours, but not with the kind of traffic we encountered. Even after hours on the road, they did not complain, found ways to busy themselves and thank goodness we are past the diaper stage! (It's been years actually but it must have traumatized me a bit because I still often utter little prayers of thanks that it's over!) When I turned towards the backseat with the camera, they even posed and smiled and they won't even do that at home! So of course these photos are just the kind I want to scrapbook with! Really enjoyed making this layout & journaling about the children in the car. Most of the materials are from Echo Park.

Thanks for looking!

new week, new month

Starting off this new week in this new month with:
piles of lovely new fabrics that I have already pre-washed and am savoring ever so shortly before they will be transformed into little useful objects and pretty things...

working on little animals and hearts for mobiles...
realizing with a bit of guilty conscience that this bunny has been waiting for her right arm since December! As a small reward for her patience, she will get a dress and apron out of some brand new material...
a colorful heart - more hearts in candy colors here....
thinking we really need to repaint our living and dining rooms this spring, inspired by this...

happy that another order is off on it's journey far away to it's new owner...

loving sunshine on a rainy day....

wanting to make something so sweet like this for a good cause...

declaring February to be a month dedicated to kindness in our home, to the people we meet...

"We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness."
- Charlie Chaplin
